The day before my surgery we took the kids to Lagoon. Ethan loved it! Ryan only loved it when the sun went down. It was a hot day. Ryan was really cute and wanted to take Ethan on all the "kiddie rides". I hate riding rides so it worked out that I had to stay off of them with Ethan. Ryan was so big and went on a few of the big roller coasters. Although he'll be able to go on more rides next year. We left the park at about 8:30 p.m. to go eat dinner (I wanted a big burger and fries for my "last meal"). Then we took the kids to Grandma Linda and Grandpa Bob's to have a sleepover for 3 nights while mom was getting her tonsils out. Here are more pictures at Lagoon:

As for me, I am doing a lot better. I had my post-op appointment today. They said all my scabs came off but I still have about 3 more weeks of healing to go. And I have a lot of swelling too (I told you I was super swollen). They told me to just not talk and it would go down. HAHA! That's a funny joke. Try not to talk when you have kids around you have to take care of. Anyway, I'm able to eat almost anything, it still hurts some and burns a little, but I can't complain...I have food in my belly! Although, I'm a little bummed, I don't think I lost any weight during this...the one thing I was looking forward to. Dang it! So now I just talk a little funny, I have to have water with me all the time, and I can't eat chips or popcorn yet. Other than that, I am doing okay.
This part is for my friends getting their tonsils out soon:
Make sure you have someone with you for between 7-10 days. You will be on drugs and will not be able to take care of your kids.
Use a Humidifier...I am still using mine.
Pain Scale 0-10 0-no pain 10- ready to meet my maker
Day 1-2 Pain: 5
Day 3 Pain: 6
Day 4-7 Pain: 9
Day 8-9 Pain: 8
Day 10-12 Pain: 6-7
Day 13 Pain: Much Better. I'm thinking my scabs came off between day 10-12. I didn't really feel the scabs too much. But I kept them VERY moist. I was constantly sipping on water and that helped a lot. I also started to eat some normal food around day 11. That helps with getting the scabs off. It hurts...but do it! Do NOT pick at your scabs. You will bleed. That is bad. Day 4-7 I did not sleep at night...at all! I was up all night keeping my scabs moist with water. It was painful...and I could not sleep. DVR came in real handy.
Diet: I tried to eat soup the first day...I threw it up.
Day 2-7 I ate Jello (that was awesome), Slim-fast (weight loss stuff from Costco), Chicken broth, Chocolate Milkshakes, KFC Mashed Potatoes, Jambas and water, water, water.
Day 8-10- Canned Peaches (the juice kind of burned, but the peaches tasted good), a few bites of hash browns, I actually ate a whole slice of bacon (but paid for it after...although I think it helped with getting scabs off), and I ate a waffle drenched in syrup, and chicken soup and squash.
Day 11-17 (now) I could eat almost anything (except hard cereal, chips, popcorn etc.) It just takes a long time to eat. If I eat too fast...it comes out my nose (you'll understand when you go through it). I am still drinking lots of water. It really does help. I even went to church yesterday with a water bottle.
p.s. You will have lots and lots and lots of mucus. I was constantly spitting in the sink. They say not to eat milk products, but I really found the milkshakes tasty and soothing so I did it anyway. Yogurt burned my throat, and milk coated it nicely. Just drink lots of water and the mucus will get better.
Meds:
I was on Tylenol 4 with Codeine. I don't like Percocete or Lortab (they make me puke). I got the liquid form, but make sure you get it FLAVORED. I had to mix my meds with Slim-fast because it tasted SO freaking bad, and burned SO freaking bad. But it was better than swallowing a pill. By day 10 I was off my meds. I was still in pain, but it was better then being sick from the drugs. I layed in bed ALL the time. I was also on, Prednisone (steroids), Anti-biotics, Zofran (anti-nausea). Taking meds on and empty stomach sucks...so I would take it with a few gulps of slim-fast to ease the stomach pain. (I never want to drink Slim-fast again!).
Do Not: Cough, Blow your nose, Sneeze (did it...ouch!), Hack, Clear your throat. I barely blew my nose for the first time today, it still didn't feel too good. Do not talk if it hurts...it will make it worse. I used a pad of paper and pen to communicate. Do not get depressed. I know it will be hard.
Was it worth it:
I'm not sure yet. I think it will be. The doctor said he pulled 50-60 infected Tonsil Stones out. Gross! So hopefully I won't be getting sick a lot and my breath will be better. I'm looking forward to 3 weeks from now.
It was awful. The worst surgery I've had. I'm sure it will be worth it though. Just remember that it will end!
Again, thanks to my Mom for taking a week off of work to come help me. And to my Grandma for coming to help the next week. She made me lots of food for the freezer so I'm set on meals for a little while. They were both a lot of help and I swear I could not have done it without them. And thanks to Ben for taking the kids to do fun things before you started school. It was good for them to get out of the house. And for filling up my humidifier with water every night without me asking and for stopping at KFC for Mashed Potatoes and at Jamba Juice for a smoothie. Thanks to Ben's Parents for watching the kids when I had the surgery. And thanks to Jake and Shayla for visiting and for the Jambas. And thanks to my visiting teachers for bringing in a meal for my family. I have felt very blessed and grateful. Thanks again!

Kelly, Kelly, kelly, you poor thing! I will never have my tonsils out ever....yuck! I can't believe it is taking so long for you to heal. I didnt know how bad it all could be!!! Maybe I should be grateful for my predicament. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't talk because my whole life it has been my big mouth that has gotten me into trouble! I can't even imagine!!! Because I love my soapbox! ; ) ! Well kelly belly when your personal hell is all over & u can actually talk we can swap sob stories and to celebrate our health until the next one bit comes around! Hang in there kiddo...this to shall pass just keep telling yourself that!
I was with you getting your wisdom teeth out! I could have told you you would have thrown up.
Never had my tonsils out and after reading that, never want to!
When I had laryngitis I couldn't talk no matter how hard I tried and when your kids aren't reading yet, it's IMPOSSIBLE to communicate! I hare you on all of that.
Keep healing and getting better!
I am glad you are feeling so much better!!! I am thankful for your tips, it is nice to hear what it is really going to be like!!:) By the time I get mine out you will have forgotten all about how horrible things were and you will be enjoying Halloween candy while I am thinking, what in the heck did I just do!!!!:)
Thank you thank you thank you for writing this! I have one month left to live it up before mine come out. Stop by one day when you take ryan to school and give me all the juicy details in person : )I want to expect the very very worst and hope it is a little better.
Holy crap Kelly! That sounds like a nightmare, except worse, because at least when you have a nightmare you can sleep. Eeesh, I feel so bad for you. I'm so relieved you're finally on the mend, and that I had mine taken out as a kid.
